The Lives of Others (2006)

The Lives of Others (GermanDas Leben der Anderen) is a 2006 German drama film debut of filmmaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. The film involves the monitoring of the cultural scene of East Berlin by agents of the Stasi, the GDR’s secret police.

The film explores how the the voyeur can become attached to the person under surveillance despite attempting to find incriminating evidence against them. It also documents the extent of the invasion to peoples privacy at the time.

It reinforces the reasons why many German citizens may be uncomfortable with the idea of being under observation in their private domain and why the country has such a strong set of laws to uphold this interest.
